Wow. Those are amazing lifts for you bodyweight. I just assumed you were heavier from reading your previous posts.

Thanks a lot Jordan!  I appreciate it.  Looking at your stuff, it appears you are not tapering down for the wedding.  I guess they can photoshop the burst eyeballs:)  Keep up the great work.

I learned that only suited squats blow my face up and I have also noticed that my squat suit is missing from its normal area... lol.

A squat suit now, some wraps next week, then a shirt.  Pretty soon you'll only have a spandex unitard and you'll be doing pilates together.

At this point I am really starting to run out of gas, but I still have GM's and JM Presses.  I could have stopped here, but I don't want to feel like I was giving up.  However, these Wednesday workouts are tough especially after hitting it hard on Monday.  However, if I want to someday grow up and be strong, I have to suck it up.

GM

Back feels strong, yet tired.

JM Presses
I had to google these to find out how to do them.  There were a number of variations.  I tried a couple and it just didn't feel right.  I think I was worn out and frustrated and I was all over the place.  So, I skipped the JM's and went to lying dumbbell tricep extensions.

Think of it like a lazy skull crusher. A skull crusher, you bring the bar to your forehead/nose. With a JM, it's to the collarbone.

Sat 4-4-09
7:45-9:10

w/ Dad & Junior Pound Member 6yr old Kayla held the board on 2 Board Press.
181.5lbs
The Pound

Oly Squats
410x2 @8
430x2 @8
450x2 @8
475x2 @9
490x1 @9+
here is where I don't know if I should be happy or pissed. 490 w/o a belt on an oly squat is a pr. however if I want to be in the 540-550 range at a meet I feel I should be doing better than this. BUT, I have done 530 regular squats in the gym a couple of times in the past & was not nearly as strong as I am now. So, I guess I think I might be happy, yet obviously hungry for more.

2 Board Press w/ chains
295x2 @8
335x2 @8+
345x2 @8+
355x2 @8
365x2 @9

I got in a better position on the heavier weights and did it much easier

GHR

I was very sore in the tri's from wed, and I don't know if I suck w/ my 490 or am I ok? Bench felt good, and it's fun having Kayla hold the boards. She is so proud of the job she does. We post our prs & goals inin The Pound & she wants hers posted too.

I'm a little surprised that 490 was a tough go. I was expecting around 505-515 as a 1RM. But a small amount like that could be due to a bad day. I wouldn't sweat it -- just oly squats. The real deal is coming up soon.

Unfortunately it's "baby steps"

Before I started this program I would never squat much over 400 pounds w/o a belt.  On this program, I have not put a belt on yet.  For the last 10 years I've squatted 1x a week on saturdays.  Very rarely I may have done a front squat during the week.  One time I did a 3x3 for 8 weeks which was all 3 lifts 3x a week.  With this program, I have been squatting 2x a week w/o fail.

Last year training for the Raw Nationals I did the following:
Squat 1 time per week-
Week 1 435 3x3 w/ belt
Week 2 415 5x5 w/ belt
Week 3 430 5x5 w/ belt
Week 4 435 5x3 w/ belt
Week 5 460 3x3 w/ belt
Week 6 430x1 470x1 500x1 520x1 all w/ belt

Meet 470 496 512

For the Raw Unity I did=
Week 1 390 5x5 w/ belt
Week 2 445 3x3 w/ belt
and then pretty much the same +10lbs as Raw Nationals for the next 6 weeks.  I also hit a 520 and 530 twice.

Meet 470 501(miss) 501

These were all done w/ a belt and regular stance.

This program I am doing boxes, oly's, pauses, chains and doing it hard 2x a week.  Outside of these meet training cycles I was not dipping into the 400s very often.  Now I'm going heavier, more often and feeling more control.

So, getting back to the baby steps.  I didn't play around above 450 very often.  Now I'm doing it very frequently, so it's almost just another weight.  470 is starting to feel the same, I would like 500 to have that feeling too, but I feel like I have to "baby step" to it.

1/2 of powerlifting is 90% mental.  Once I do a weight a few times and feel confident that I'm not going to get hurt w/ it, then it becomes second nature.  On this program all of the weights w/o a belt are more of a mental struggle vs. physical.  Everytime I get under the heavy (new) weight it's like dipping my toe in the pool instead of jumping right in.

So, yes I would have liked to be in the 505-515 range, but I hadn't attempted 490 w/o a belt, so I had to break thru that barrier 1st.  It just kind of sucks that I feel like I have a big board in my mind and I need to check off each weight as I go, instead of saying, "who cares, just throw on another 25# and let's see what happens."  If I haven't properly visualized or mentally prepared, I struggle.  I may get it, but not w/ the confidence I feel I should.

Having said all that...(who am I talking to, myself?) I feel great w/ my progress so far on this program.  It's just the max weights take more mental focus.  However, a few weeks ago if someone said "do you think you could squat 490 w/o a belt?" I would have laughed, since I know I would never even think about trying that.

Btw-I know that's not a big deal to most of you out there, but like I said, it's baby steps.

Sorry Andrew...it took a long time on my last post, so your question came up after I submitted mine.

Raw Nationals...hmmm.  As of 4/4/09 2:29pm, I am not doing Raw Nationals.  My plan right now is to do a local meet at the end of June and missing this year's Raw Nationals.  I would like to be there, but family comes first.  I have 2 daughters 6&7 and we want to spend $$ on family outings and vacations instead of me going off on my own for a few days.  I have been very fortunate to do a bunch of Nationals, and Guatemala, and the Arnold, and the Raw Unity Meet.  However, we can use that time and money for a weekend at a waterpark, or a mini vacation.

Having said that, it's not 100% that I'm not going, it's more like 98%.  There is one possible avenue for me to go, yet I haven't heard anything for a few months now.

Btw-I checkout your log...those are some great #s

Are you doing Raw Nationals?

I hear ya on the vacations. I actually made a post on the usapl forum saying that we should have the national meets in fun locations so we can make family outings and actual vacations out of them.

I am doing raw nationals this year, yes. I am ditching the gear because I just got sick of it. Sure the world meets are in gear and all that, but the raw meets are making a big hit now in the US with raw nationals, raw arnold, and raw unity so I am going to head down that route because it is just a lot more fun.

I hear you about the weights being mental. You know, for one competition my goal was to squat 900, but I was having the same issues with the weights getting to me mentally. I knew the strength was there -- it was a confidence issue. So I figured that to squat 900 in a meet, I needed to do X for a double, Y for a triple, and so on. And I put those numbers where I would see them everyday. Just by looking at them everyday, I got used to the idea and it helped confidence wise when it came time to actually do the weights. Maybe something to try....

I'm sorry, I am not real familiar w/ the protocol for response on a board like this.  I very very very rarely ever post anything anywhere, so this is kind of new.  I'm not sure if I'm supposed to respond here on my stuff or go and answer on their log.

So...

Andrew, I'm with you on the gear.  I SUCK w/ the gear and I don't dedicate the time or effort to get better.  My carryover is NAPF in Guatemala 2007 (last geared meet) 1603 total and Raw Unity Meet 2009 1532 total.  I don't want to waste time trying to improve w/ the gear because I tried for 6+ years and did not get the results I wanted.  So, I'm staying raw.

Mike...I hear you on the #'s that's what I was saying about Kayla wanting her #'s posted because we have our goals right there on the wall to see everyday.  There is no better feeling than when I get to update it!!
