Here's a good question: How often should I use a belt? I'm about to start my intensity phase, so I'll be doing a lot of one rep type work. Is this a block where I should include the belt, or should I forgo it for now, and wait a while until a competition roles around so that I'm not dependent on it?

Hi Corey

I think you have a few choices here IMO

- Since you are not doing a competition in a while, you could still stand to train without a belt

- If your intensity phase is leading you to singles @10 you might want to wear a belt for the exercise on that day just to be on the safe side (or not - you may not wish to)

- If you are doing multiple instances of a squat or pull a week, you might want to do one with a belt, and the rest without, just to practice the skill of wearing a belt

I'd say use it, at least part of the time. I found, as a beginner, that using the belt required a set of skills that I couldn't really develop any other way. I also found that I had to really learn how wearing the belt had a tendency to impact my form, so there was another learning curve.

How often / much to use it? Hoo boy - my answer to that is "You have to find the balance that works for you, allowing you to learn lifting with the belt as well as developing your core strength without the belt."

Tron has some good guidelines to get started.

The only other thing I'd add is now is the time to play around, learn, and have some fun with it!
