Supplements
Permalink

Ok let me preface this by saying when I can afford supplements, I usually cant afford more than 1 or 2. My question is, has anybody ever bought any supplements that they can honestly say are worth the price? Every time I talk to a powerlifter or somebody they seem to tell me to try whatever they have a sponsorship deal with. Yeah I know atlargenutrition.com or MuscleTech is your sponsor, but would you use it if it wasnt your sponsor and you had to pay for it? I honestly have never got much gains from supplements. I tried Cell Tech in 2005 and got zero results. I tried creatine monohydrate in 2004 and had no results. If anybody knows anything that is worth buying, please let me know.

If I were forced to pick only two supplements to take, I would personally choose whey protein powder and Fish Oil.

Whey protein powder is a cheap and convenient way to supplement your protein intake above and beyond your regular meals.

Fish oil has many benefits including cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory, hormonal etc..
Just go to PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/) and do a search for "fish oil" to check it out for yourself.

Anyhow, just my own personal opinion.
Even though I used to tell girls I am a doctor, I am in fact not.

I don't have any issues afforded supplements, but like you said most DO NOT work. I throw in the fact that I can afford them to really add to why I don't have any at all. They are crap. Now I just refuse to buy any fancy garbage. I say follow Dr. Tron's advice and keep it simple. I use minimal supps and make fine progress. Here is what I use when I decide to fork out some cash for goods in order of what I think is important.
1) Multivitimins.
2) Omega 3,6,9 fish oil
3) Whey protein (This is number 3 because I eat high protein meals and really focus on a good diet)
4)L-Glutamine.

I have used cell-tech previously before they changed it. I gained 20 pounds in one month and got great strength gains and bulk gains (fat/water). The new formula tastes better but does not work.

No-xplode and those types have things have given me zero results, except for a pump that makes training properly difficult.

'Testostrogain' from 2003 and earlier (2003 I think anyways) did work, and worked well. It made my skin oily and added a noticable mass to my frame. Now the CDN and US version is very de-tuned due to regulations.

Purple K (Low PH creatine with zero cals) is all hype and added nothing for me, my workout partner and numorous others in the gym.

To sum everything up, I have spent thousands on products that don't work just from reading articles and viewing the before and after pics. This was while I was younger and ignorant. It is pretty humorous after watching "Bigger, stronger, faster" how the supplement world works and how a before and after photoshoot all happens on the same day. They take an out of shape guys photo, use a computer program to slim him down, add abs and definition and then post the photos in the mag. There was a muscle-tech employee who did photoshoots that talked about how corrupt it was. He then lost his job after the show was released to the public for obvious reasons.

Hah well I guess I started rambling a little too much as usual, but from my trial and errors I can tell you that FOOD is the best supplement out there.

Also I want to add that no one should trust Tron. I had pulled muscles in my back and he told me to send him a photo with saran-wrap underwear on for him to diagnose my injuries. He assured me he was a certified doctor.

I agree. Fish oil and whey protein are the only things I take. If I had the time to eat steaks and salmon all day, I probably wouldn't take those either. Trueprotein has some good deals on whey protein. I bought 25lbs for $95.

Ok Jordan - I can admit that what I did was innapropriate, but if you would have went to a "REAL" doctor all he would have done is told you to take some tylenol 3 and stop doing whatever it was that hurt your back in the first place.

I really think it was a victimless crime IMO

I take 3 supplements Protein Powder, Creatine, and Carlson's Fish Oil.

I prefer CMDI from True Protein for my main protein powder and meal replacement and I will take some whey protein concentrate post workout with some milk and creatine. If you are on a budget I highly recommend the whey protein concentrate it is 4 dollars and 65 cents a pound. I like the liquid fish oil product from Carlson's because it is the only fish oil product I have tried that has not given me the fish burps. I agree with what Jordan says about almost all supplements being crap. The three above are the only ones I will spend money on....

Jordan I agree with you about the No Xplode. I spent $70 on it because some dudes at the gym were raving about it. I got nothing from it. I'm better off drinking a cup of coffee before I work out, much cheaper and works better. Yeah "Bigger, Stronger, Faster" really exposed the billion dollar supplement industry for what it is a hoax mainly. I like when they had Chris Bell had those Hispanic guys putting together supplements in his house. Showing that most these places just put crap together in their basements and call it such and such big time supplement company. Im glad Im not the only one who sees these things for what they mainly are hoaxes. I think its a shame that people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars for this stuff and they might get little to no gains from it. Briangodsen thanks for the info about that protein thats 25 pounds for $95 thats a deal. Right now all Im taking is a multi vit, vitamin C, fish oil (moring and evening) and a protein shake a day. Thanks for the info Jordan, Tron, briangodsen, MikePop. Im definitely checking out that protein 25 pounds for 95 bucks. Peace.

Mike (and anyone else). If you enter this discount code: CST815 at trueprotein.com, you get 5% off your order. That's how I arrived at the $95 for the 25lbs of protein. Normally it's 100 bucs.

The only supplements that have been proven to show any effect at all are whey (and not that much), creatine, HMB, and the amino acid leucine.

For protein, you can get enough if you drink skim milk, eat egg whites, and fat free cheese slices. These options are much cheaper and deliver high quality protein. Remember, we only need 1.4-2.4 g/kg as active lifters. Any more will result in fat storage.

Leucine supplementation has shown to increase protein synthesis by 94% to 145% when taken with a high glycemic juice with in an hour after training. Make sure you include leucine in your diet by supplementation or eating lots of leucine rich foods include soybeans, lentils, beef, peanuts, egg yolk and milk to name a few. Soy beans are the best natural source (2.97g/100 grams of beans) where milk is fairly low (0.27g/100 grams of milk).

Creatine has been shown to show increases in lean mass or 0.36% peer week and HMB 1.4% increase in muscle mass. The creatine will also give you a little bit of extra energy and a lot of water retention. HMB will sink the budget, its very expensive jawdrop.gif.

Anything else in the store has not been proven to do a thing, so at this point, save your money.confuse

Thanks brian godsen for the info on that whey protein deal. Thats a great deal. Yeah bkipp most supplements are just what they are gimmicks to get us to waste our hard earned money. Some fool working at GNC tried to sell me T-Bomb II once. He claimed it had all the benefits of anabolic steroids without any of the risks. Yeah I'm sure. If that were the case, then nobody would be getting busted for steroids because they'd just be taking T-Bomb II instead. Maybe some fools would believe that crap but not me.

Not to pick on you, but...there's quite a bit of mis-information in this post, IMO.

Can you quote sources for your information?

As an example:

"Remember, we only need 1.4-2.4 g/kg as active lifters. Any more will result in fat storage. "

Wrong.  Fat storage results from a caloric surplus. If you're in caloric deficit, you won't gain fat.  It's impossible.

The recommendation of 1.4-2.4g/kg comes from where?  B/c if I look at a highly regarded nutritionist's site (Lyle McDonald, author of The Protein Book & many others), he concludes:

strength/power athletes should aim for 1.5 g/lb protein per day (again, this is about 3.3 g/kg for the metrically inclined). So for a 200 lb strength/power athlete, thats 300 grams of protein per day. For a 300 lber, thats 450 grams per day.

Source:  Protein Requirements for Strength & Power Athletes

Lyle's stuff is always extremely well-researched.  The Protein Book is about 250 pages of in-depth review of the research to date.  More pages of references that I can even read in my lifetime.

Yeah Bob you basically said what I was going to say. Fat storage from protein is not going to happen unless you are on a caloric surplus. If your daily needs are 2300 cals a day just to maintain weight, than a diet of ONLY carbs will not make you fat if you are below your daily caloric needs. The material I have read falls on the same numbers as what you wrote. 1.5g-2.0g per pound. I was going to respond last night but I thought Mike T was going to yell at me again. LOL.
