Excellent job Mike! From watching your vids of pre-comp training and your problem hitting depth at a comp I am just curious why you opened so light? It looks like you COULD NOT miss even 400kg if your life depended on it without even using that much energy. Would it make more sense to go heavier to hit your depth rather than to squat 859 for three seperate reps? I ask because 1)I am curious on your way of considering your attemps (It being Nats and all) and 2) I can use your knowledge on my upcoming comps. Awesome bench, and even more awesome was your attempt at the WR for your pull.. I just think you are misjudging how powerful yur squat really is. If I made 915 look like you do than in my gym training, than the number 859 would not ever come into consideration. Again, excuse my ignorance on your squat opener. I figure that rather than keep wondering, I might as well ask ya! Congrats on the win!

My logic for picking 859 on the squat opener was honestly based on the way training felt. I wanted to pick something that was not intimidating in the least so I could fully concentrate on my execution. It sucks that it took me 3 attempts to figure out what they were looking for and I really need to get past that, but I think it was probably a good choice of opener. If I had gotten whites on my opener, I would've gone 892 on my 2nd and 920 on my 3rd. The strength is there, I just have to compete well.
Yeah taking three attempt would be frustrating to say the least. I think you handle and walk out weights easily enough that from watching vids of your squats they look effortless, even though they might not feel it. I am only going from me sitting in front of my comp watching you. Vids always look easier and faster than they ever feel. I would have never guessed that even 900 would be at all intimidating for ya!
A seperate question for ya. When are you going to take away the fear of bombing and being conservative and just ask for a monster and give it all ya got? Lots of people waiting to see that Mike!

It's not the weight itself that's intimidating. I know I can do it. It's just a matter of hitting depth. Keep in mind I only had 2-3 successful workouts before the meet.
I probably won't just load it up and turn loose. A big one will happen when I make a strong 1st and 2nd attempt.

Squats felt kind of rough. I didnt realize how un-recovered I was until I got under some weight. I need to get back on my GPP work. The benching with chain was kind of flat today as well. Strength is there. Enthusiasm is not. I opted to go with the rep protocol due to it being a short training week (and an accumulation block). The lever rows were a new movement. I was able to rig up a way to row a dumbbell handle but the loading was on a barbell (connected by chain). So I can go as heavy as I want (which isnt a problem yet) without needing an obnoxious dumbbell. The floor pressing did not feel taxing in the least, so I did an extra set. Set a big PR on this movement, too. The lunges suck like lunges always do. I got really sore from these.

2Board work took a little to find my set-point. But it feels like its going to be just what I need for my bench. Im actually looking forward to turning the stress up for the bench work. The deadlifts were kind of rough. I was tired and not very focused and it showed on the last set when I had the shakes. But it went okay and Ill fix what I need to fix. BTN Press actually felt kind of strong for how strict I was doing them. I really like this movement.
Yes I have. It's not too bad, actually. There's not much time to transition after Nationals, but if you set things up right, recovery isn't too big of an issue.
thanks for the kind words mike. i didnt have a good day by any means but at least i know im close to being halfway decent at this sport. my buddy who came in third at 198 said that any meet i do from now on will seem easier just because the nationals is faster and ultra-competitive. it was great to see you lift in person and you def left some weight on the platform. too bad i didnt get a chance to talk to you in person but im sure in the future. thanks again

This morning my CNS score was low and during warm-ups, things werent as locked in as they usually are, so I decided not to go for a PR. Depth was decent, though. Each rep was boarderline or better. Still an inch or two above where I want to be, though. I should have known better than going for a PR on the bench, too. I got the 3rd rep, but it was ugly. Im not too worried, though. I could use a little hi RPE work in the bench. I hit a PR on the Floor Press mostly due to leaving some in the tank from last week. Not bad, though. Got some solid work in. Overall, Im pleased w/ performance considering my physiological raw material.

Deads were very solid today! I was strokin with 730. I was locking in my upper back (which I wasnt doing at Nats) and everything was clicking. Todays weight selection was perfect for 2Boards. Efforts were good. I felt like I got some good bench training in. Workouts like this have been few and far between lately. For lunges obviously more efficient this week. 33# PR.

Benching went pretty good today. Felt pretty strong. Im getting better at using tighter shirts. Maybe one of these days Ill use one in a meet. For deads noticeably fatigued from yesterday, and my hands were absolutely killing me. I stick it out though, Small PR and some fairly strong rep work. I cut the BTN press a little short after my PR set. Im flat out gassed and a little out of balance autonomically. Slot 3 has been very tough energy-wise the past few weeks and Im not sure whether its dehydration, temperature, ANS, etc.

Squats were pretty good today. Stance was slightly inconsistent, but strength was good. I need to continue to focus on my mental cues and not expect them to be habit yet. I havent PRed in ply press for a long time, but made a 4# PR today. The rep work was on the easy side, though. Not sure exactly what to do about that maybe add an extra set? That would have been contraindicated by my ANS score this morning. So I dont know right now. Ill work on this problem, though. The lever rows are a cool exercise, but man they suck. I really dont like rowing anyway. FYI, it is recorded as plate poundage per side only. They are pretty tough.

I was supposed to wear a tight suit for squats today, but apparently I grew and can no longer fit any of my tight suits. I should have some new (bigger) ones on the way. I ended up wearing a medium suit, but the switching caused the warm-ups to take forever. The 920 set was a tad high, but I forgot to speed up my descent. It was MUCH better than the last time I took this weight and Im confident that I can hit it when it counts. Another problem was once I started getting tired, I stopped sitting back. I cut the last set because fatigue was interfering with my execution too much. I didnt PR on my bench, but it felt good to handle some weight. I was gassed for the floor presses. Hit a small PR, but honestly I just wanted to get them over with.

Glory to God for even getting to attempt an 860 deadlift! It was a nice lift, too! Max effort, but do doubt about it. If I can do this in a meet, it will break John Kucs American record (858). The World Record at 275 is 876. Right on the cusp I tried to make the board work tougher by chopping the rest intervals. Even though the sets were kind of easy, its good CNS conditioning (feeling that weight in the hands) The SSB work was still tough, but I handled it better than I have before. Sets 4 and 5 were VERY tough, though.
