Basic RTS question
Permalink

Hello Mike,

I read the second chapter of your manual on the RTS system and I had a quick question.

Since the system does not base the training cycles on percentage, is it safe to say that your training log, and a very honest rating of your reps and sets, are the point of reference needed to devise the proper training cycle?

P.S. I see what you're saying about my many posts. I apologize again I am the closest thing to a neanderthal with a lap top.

Thanks,
Nick

The training cycles in the beginning stages of RTS are not based on percentages because we're trying to break down paradigms (gosh, I hope I spelled that right).  For example, in what I call "Phase 1 RTS," which is everything in the manual that is coming out, you don't count sets because you're 1) teaching yourself to read the signs of your body and 2) gather enough background data to develop your own cutsom volume charts.

It's more exact than that paragraph sounds, so just bear with me for a moment.

And in all honesty, whether you like it or not, you're always training with a percent of your 1RM.  It's just whether or not you choose to acknowledge it's existance.  Frequency, Fatigue, RPE's, sets, volume, etc are all models that we have created to try to describe how the body reacts to training.

As far as using my particular log as a point of reference, I would suggest you use your own log.  Obviously that's easier said than done -- which is why I wrote the RTS book.

For now, start by rating your sets using the RPE scale.  Continue everything else as normal for a couple of weeks.  When the manual arrives, then start to concern yourself with all this other stuff.

If I totally missed your question, let me know!

Yes,

I think I've got what you're saying, I'll start applying the rating systems to my log and I'll handle the rest when the manual comes out.

Thanks for your time,
Nick
