Stones
Permalink

Thanks for the kind words, Jordan.

I think that stone work could be very beneficial to a powerlifter, with a caveat.  The caveat is that it can be very hard on the biceps and forearms; it's a common event for torn biceps.  I injured my forearm on it.  Key point:  keep the arms higher on the stone to minimize the stress on the arms.

WIth that said, the reasons I think it could be beneficial:  it forces you into a deep, rounded lower back position on the pick and lap.  But - and this is key - the stone pressing against your abs supports the spine, minimizing trauma.  This gives you a relatively safe way to train rounding your lower back.  That way, if your form on a DL does go south at ME, you have some training of those muscles.

Stone work is all about hip drive.  Obvious carryover to the squat and DL.  It puts you in a deficit position, so if you have problems off the floor, I think it could be really good.

The total loads are low - doing a 200lb stone is hard! - which means minimal impact on your recovery reserves.

Volume Block 4
Day 3 of 12

Deadlifts: x3@8-9
225x3
315x3
405x3
500x3@7
600x3@8.25
635x2@9 Thought I could get a triple @9...

b+w squats: x3@8-9
225x3
315x3@7
405x1@7 Almost lost my balance at the bottom.
500x3@8.75
500x3@9

Hook grip training- each rep with 3 sec hold. First time training the hook.
135
225
315
405
500

Deadlifts- Better than the 600x1 rep last week where I felt like a rickety old man. Should come back to where I was in a few weeks.

Squats- Still felt foreign today. A lot stronger but not great

Hook grip- I want to start using this as my regular deadlift grip since I tear my hands so often. Today made it feel like it will never happen since 500 pounds made my thumbs feel like they were going to break. LOL. I guess it should get a little more confortable every time.

225x5@7
275x5@8
315x5@9
275x5@8

Closegrip T&G: +MM x3@8-9

145x2@10
135x5@7 No band this set.

Seated DB hammer curls
60x5@7
80x5@9
90x3@9.5

Slowly making progress coming into week 2 back. Close grip paused and band work is still waaaay behind but progress is progress. I did some push presses and this will most likely be my last time. These use to hurt my elbows and today was no difference. Reps killed. Made training my biceps tough at first. Still need some size on my arms to get into this bench shirt so hopefully that comes soon.

Next time people shouldn't be so general when saying 'Boris' to assume that everyone knows what they mean. So does this mean that vodka ISN'T good for rehab...??

Thanks! It is coming back fast. Booze is the key. I drink a bottle of red wine with dinner and the next day I make pr's. I dont have a drink for a week and I get stuck. Must be the extra calories and carbs I am ingesting. So as a lesson for everyone, have drinks daily with dinner. You even look better in the mirror with a few drinks. I turn gorgeous when I am drunk.

Volume block
Day 6 of 12

Equipped bench:x1-3@8-9
135x3
225x3
275x3
315x3@7
Bench shirt on
405x2@7
455x3@8.5 1.5" from touching
475x2@9 1.5" from touching
500x1@9.25 1: from touching
455x3@9 1.5" from touching

Raw Wide grip 1 board:x3@8-9
225x3
275x3@7
315x3@7.5
345x3@8
365x3@9.5     325x3@9 last week.

First equipped bench day in 7 weeks I believe. As expected, everything was ackward and weak. 455 felt heavy in the hands and I could not find the groove of the shirt for the life of me. That is ok. Lots of time to figure that out now. I went to the locker room after equipped benching to put my shirt in my locker and to put my t-shirt back on, and someone took my ripped up, chalk covered shirt. Luckily my buddy who owns the gym had some extra supplement shirts kicking around. Made some progress on the 1 boardS. Made up 40 pounds so that is good. Still really, really weak pressing off of my chest. Slow.

Of course someone took it...what did you expect?  The sports memorabilia market is out of hand.  I bet someone saw it was your shirt and thought..."goldmine"  I suspect it's on E-Bay right now.  Or, this guy has a private collection and he is going to display it in his private relic room.

Haha yeah no doubt. If I was someone looking at myself with the Titan shirt on, I too would steal it. Cool thing about losing the shirt is that the replacement freebie I got had like a 15 inch neck on it, so it looked like I was lifting in a turtleneck. It was a tiny bit short too so when i set up to press it went up to my bellybutton. New gym style. It could have been flattering to wear if I wasn't fat.

Volume (sort of)
Day 7 of 12

In a hurry today so I didn't do the appropriate ammount of volume I was supposed to do. Still got some good gains over last week. Have to go and watch the fights tonight and attend a house party. WOOOOOO.

Deadlifts
315x3
405x3
500x1@7
600x1@7.75-8
640x3@9.5 Great gain over 635x2 last week. This could have been at a 9 or slightly less but I tore my hand on the second rep and got blood all over my hand so gripping the bar on the third was a chore. It was heavy due to a slipping grip making it ackward.
585x1@7.75

B+W Squats
135x3
225x3
315x3
Belt
405x1@7
Wraps
500x1@easy 8
550x1@8.25
Wraps and belt off
500x1@Medium 8

550 felt heavier on my back than 625 before I went on my trip. BOOOOOO.
