Hopefully someone can help who has better advice than me (having never dealt with hernia surgury in any fashion). I would listen to what the doctor says and take his advice. I'm not sure how much "rehabbing" can be done for something like this. Maybe just let it heal.

I never did herniate a disk but I have sustained several injuries to my lower back and the word I got from the therapist and doctors was always the same. Start light and work your way back, don't be in too big of a hurry to stack the weight back on or you could reinjury yourself. Typically after an injury the muscles in that area will lock up if there is a danger of hurting it again, then they overstrain and end up causing another injury although less serious. Best advice is to not push the PRs too hard for a month or two, but you can certainly train anything that doesn't cause pain
