yeah i think you guys are right with this. i have trained with dj for years and he always talks about how weak his upper back is. i really dont think this is true and the more i lift i realize that taking the three core lifts and doing variations of them will help. in my own experience i rarely do straight deadlifts off the floor but rotate below knee rack work, 4 in deficit pulls and heavy stiff legs. i know that if i can get the weight to just below my knees ill lock it out. we all have to find what works for us.
when i was in college (2001-2006) we had no back machines at the gym. everyone did tbar rows, deadlifts, bent rows, pullups, power cleans, etc. as a result it wasnt uncommon to see 405 lb deadlifts all the time from people who didnt know much about training.
now this is all complicated by the shoulder injury dj has which has healed pretty good in the month or so since the accident. deadlifting will put stress on the ac joint and he may just have to stay a little lighter in the meantime, but this may help him to concentrate more on getting more comfortable with the deadlift position. hes pulled 640 in the past and from all the squatting hes doing once the pain subsides hell prob pull a pr
its a 515 pull, nothing too crazy. Yea man its weird, i only do that "hitch" thing with 5 plates man, i dont know why ive always been like that! Any thing lighter i snap right to lockout and anything heavier like 585 and up i never do that... Anyway yea i agree with you man 100%, im going to take some time to work with lower weights and focus on form and explosive power on my "heavy" dead days for now. Like i said ill still be pulling heavy stiff legs and rdl's along with a lot of squatting and rowing so im not too worried, i plan on getting back into the heavy stuff after the usapl nationals this year which is i think june 14?? So the weekend after that ill probably try to start working up in the high 5's again and slowly work my way back into the 600's.... Thanks for all ur advice so far dano, appreciate it a lot man.
